Free radicals are a by-product of metabolism (like a waste product), and are also caused by radiation exposure, drugs and exposure to pollutants and chemicals.
Free radicals cause oxidative stress, which is when oxygen ions and peroxides react with and damage the DNA in lipid-based molecules like the cell membrane, causing serious damage.
A dog’s survival depends on their ability to prevent or repair the damage. Neglected oxidative stress will result in the manifestation of diseases such as cancer, arthritis and organ failure.
Enter antioxidants, the free radicals scavengers.
Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow the damage done to cells by free radicals. They work by either providing the molecule with the electron required to repair, or by breaking the molecule down until it is rendered harmless.
A whole-foods based, naturally occurring antioxidant is always best.
Antioxidants are present in abundance in colourful fruits and vegetables. Berries, kale, broccoli, carrot, pomegranate and red cabbage are some of the best sources of antioxidants for dogs.
